Overview

When your doctor needs a closer look.

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast.

Screening mammograms are done routinely to look for breast cancer in women who have no apparent symptoms. Diagnostic mammograms are different: they're used after a suspicious result on a screening mammogram, or when signs of breast cancer lead your doctor to check the breast tissue.
