Screening and diagnosis

Screening is a routine check when you have no symptoms. A diagnostic mammogram needs a referral. It follows a suspicious screening result, or signs your doctor wants to check.

Procedures we perform
- Corticosteroid injectionsInto a joint or soft tissue, such as the hip or shoulder
- Guided by ultrasoundNot offered: biopsies, drainage, FNA or CT-guided spinal injections
$230 per injection: flat rate, non-rebateable, paid on the day. Bring a driver, and don't drive for 2 to 4 hours afterwards.
Preparing for your scan
Most scans need
little or no preparation.
Here's the short version. Each service page has the full steps, and if your scan needs anything else, we'll tell you when you book.
- (01)Full bladder
Drink, then hold
Pelvic & renal tract · first-trimester pregnancy ultrasound- Finish drinking 1 litre of water at least 1 hour before your appointment time, and hold.
- Children aged 6 to 12: finish 2 large glasses of water 1 hour before, and hold.
- (02)Fasting
Nothing to eat or drink
Abdominal ultrasound- No food or drink for 6 to 8 hours before your examination.
- A small amount of water can be taken with medication.
- (03)On arrival
Remove any metal
CT, X-ray & dental imaging- You may change into a gown and remove jewellery or metallic items. For dental imaging, remove these from your head and neck, including dentures.
- Tell the radiographer if there's any chance you could be pregnant.
- (04)Plan ahead
Bring a driver
Interventional procedures- Don't drive for 2 to 4 hours after your procedure.
- Tell us when you book if you take blood thinners.

Bone density scans are available at our Koo Wee Rup and Rosebud clinics. Call the clinic to book.

where it counts.
Costs & referrals
Some procedures attract a charge. Our team will always let you know when you book.
Billing
- CT & X-ray
- All CTs and X-rays are bulk billed.
- Dental OPG
- All OPG X-ray services are bulk billed.
- Ultrasound
- Some ultrasounds are not bulk billed. We'll let you know when you book.
- Interventional
- A fee of $230 per injection applies. It's non-rebateable.
Referrals
- Most scans
- Need a referral. Bring it with you, upload a photo when you book online, or ask your doctor to send it electronically.
- 3D & 4D baby scans
- No referral is needed, because these are optional, non-diagnostic scans.
- BreastScreen
- Book directly with BreastScreen Victoria.
- Allied health
- Physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and podiatrists can refer for certain X-rays, and physios and podiatrists for some ultrasounds. Some items attract a reduced rebate.
Most CT and X-ray requests don't need an appointment. Please check with your clinic before you come in.
